STATEMENT:
Stranger things season one, captures the fear of the unknown and fears surrounding child abduction.. As well as a monster who lurks in another dimension known as the “upside down”. The plot consists of a small group of friends during the 80s, one friend mysteriously goes missing and the town is in shock. Another Major character, eleven, is a small girl who has grown up in a government lab knowing few words and adapted crazy traits. Telekinesis traits, witch connect her to the disappearance of will and the upside down. The shows emulates traits of missing children in the 80s and the few efforts put towards helping the problem. One scene in particular, when will's mother goes into the police station to find a wall filled with missing children posters. This makes her determined to find her son, and has no clue the lengths she will have to go through. I plan on emphasizing my adaptation on the ongoing issue with child abduction and its effects on families and children.
I really enjoy this show because of its relatable qualities, and the facts that's it is placed in the 80s. It makes it a lot different from other shows. Another aspect of the show I enjoy is the scientific and mysterious parts. Having to do with eleven and her backstory as well as the demogorgon and its role in the show. I also really enjoy the actors who play in the show. They make it enjoyable and fun to watch.
As part of my prequel I want to focus on will's mom, creating a short story of her outlook on the situation. How she felt, and making it more personal. With addition of her outlook on eleven, seeing as she doesn't know about her powers. By creating a short story's I'll be able to focus on the abduction piece of the show, other than all the sci-fi aspects we get fro, the kids points of view.
RESEARCH:
Stranger Things and its Connection to Child Abduction
Studying a modern television series, based in the 80s created a great interest in myself. In Stranger Things, a world of monsters and kids. There is an underlying theme through the show based on child abduction. Child abduction is a serious problem, it was hidden and rare until the 80s when the problem heightened. Stranger things grasps the idea of child abduction and puts a spin of monsters to create an interesting series. In my adaptation I plan on taking the ideas of the “upside down” and the monster/science aspect of the show and bring it into modern day(2018) and in the town of Saco. This will make it relatable. This will show how it will affect the modern teen. Creating a small group of friends, a mix of outcasts”. The group goes on an adventure to find there friend who gets lost in the eastern trail behind Thornton Academy on his walk home. This price of creative writing is going portray the real life horror of child abduction.
“Online campaign helps missing kids; Milk Carton 2.0 reinvents '80s cause for the digital age”*
This article shows the ways of helping abducted children in the 80s, commonly known as milk carton kids in a new fashion. They are calling it milk carton kids 2.0, it is a spin on the original milk carton
The Missing Children Society of Canada receives alerts from law enforcement officials and posts the missing child's name and photo to its website. The posts are automatically picked up by the donated social media networks and shared with your friends and contacts.
I plan on using “milk carton kids” in my adaptation. Using the 80s as an influence in my modern day abduction story. Creating a spin off of the milk carton onto something more relevant in time and more relatable to the reader. Faces of sad children created a sense of urgency with towns, raising people's fears.
“How 'Stranger Things' Captures '80s Panic Over Missing Kids; The Netflix series pays homage to films of the 1980s, but it also depicts the issue of missing children at a time when it was gaining national attention”.
Stranger things is a tribute to all things 80s, one thing that comes with that is the fear surrounding child abduction. In this article they highlight how the writers of the television series were able to capture the audience with a sci fi related theme. However have an underlying message related to the real problem of child abduction.
They turned out to be part of a (rather tasteless) marketing stunt for Stranger Things, the Netflix series that debuted July 15. Its plot is set in the 1980s and revolves around the disappearance of Byers, at the hands of a monster, and the attempts of his friends and family to find him, with the help of a girl with supernatural abilities. The show has received great reviews, with writers calling it "a cultural phenomenon" and "an instant cult classic." It's not hard to see why: The show is a thrilling tribute to '80s films, with the energy of Steven Spielberg in his prime. The show also draws on another element from that period, one that is far truer--and perhaps scarier--than the monster.
I will be able to use there hooks such as scary monsters and people with superpowers in my adaptation, while still focusing on the real problem. I intend on creating a “monster” that the town doesn't know about but learns about in the abduction process. And pins the kids disappearance on, pinning it on something like that is easy. However i want to show an underlying message within my writing.
“ You have a role in preventing child Abduction”*
This article points out the problems within child abduction as well as ways to prevent and possibly solve the problem. It point out the nations history with child abduction, and other issues surrounding it.
“The statement notes that there is a need to strike a balance when offering advice on preventing abduction:safeguard children but do not generate fear.”
The article points out the fear surrounding child abduction, and steps to help families. Ion my adaptation i plan on using the different methods such as carrying a card with their name and address. I plan on creating a setting where abduction is extremely rare and by having these different abduction methods will create a serious fear around abduction.
Familiar things: the TV series Stranger Things portrays family breakdown yesterday and today.
This article pays tribute to the show itself and embellishes each aspect of it. From the actors and their roles to the setting and its accuracy to the 80s. It talks a little about the struggles I'm the 80s referring to home issues and child abduction and how it is tied into the television series.
The Duffer Brothers are fairly cynical about the relations between children and parents: When the missing Will is presumed dead, his oleaginous alcoholic absentee father shows up, looking for someone to sue. But given the trajectory of American parenting since then--the frequency of child abuse, in all categories, continued to increase after 1980, according to the Heritage Foundation--one wonders whether they are cynical enough.
I plan on focusing on the. Hold abduction and home life problems in my adaptation so this article just gives reassurance that it is shown in stargazer things. And that it is an ongoing theme in the series.
Parents investigated for neglect after letting kids walk home alone
In this modern article, it explains the worsened fear amongst child abduction. It has gotten to a point where kids are unable to walk to school without there parents and themselves being questioned. They also live in a society where it's necessary to Carry around an information card.
Mary Anderson, a spokeswoman for CPS, said she could not comment on cases but that neglect investigations typically focus on questions of whether there has been a failure to provide proper care and supervision. In such investigations, she said, CPS may look for guidance to a state law about leaving children unattended, which says children younger than 8 must be left with a reliable person who is at least 13 years old. The law covers dwellings, enclosures and vehicles.
I plan on carrying this new day experiences into my adaptation seeing it is going to be placed in a modern world.
How ‘Stranger Things’ Captures ’80s Panic Over Missing Kids
This online article that I found talks about the underlying message that stranger things captures with child abduction. And talk about real situations during the 80s having to do with the child abduction movement.
Byers goes missing during a time of national panic over the disappearances or abductions of children. “That was about the height of the missing child movement,” says Robert Lowery Jr., vice president for the Missing Children Division of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
I plan on creating a scary environment for children and their family's. Creating an environment where fear is surrounded by child abduction.
